The Dining Room is an unsual movie which was adapted from a play by A.R. Gurney Jr. It was part of the "American Playhouse" series. All the action is centered in a dining room. There no real linear plot because there are many stories broken into fragments. Each actor plays up to ten characters none of whom are connected. It's disconcerting at first but becomes delightful after a time. One day passes in which we witnesses tragedy, truimph, and everyday life for many different people. It takes a lot for the actors to morph themselves into children and then the elderly. Six actors play over fifty characters in this story of unruly children, proper parents, devoted servants, and curious outsiders who all combine to unravel a tightly controlled world in which the right schools and the right clubs seem to be the most important things in this romantic comedy.
